Working at HWDSB

FAQs

What does casual employment at HWDSB look like?

Most employees begin their career at HWDSB as casual employees. Casual employments means you're entered into a pool of employees that provide on-call, flexible work replacing absent staff. They are not tied to one location and can pick up daily assignments at various locations across the school board.

New hires will receive training on selecting daily assignments, which are typically posted day-of or the night before.

As a casual employee, you are unionized and have access to internal job postings and opportunities for career advancement. You are also eligible to apply to Long-Term Occasional assignments, or LTOs, where you are replacing a permanent employee for a pre-determined length of time (e.g., parental leave). LTOs offer set hours at a single location and the potential for greater pay and benefits.

Casual employees are encouraged to apply for permanent positions with HWDSB, which could include a medical and dental benefits package, seniority, paid vacation, and pension.

Will asking for an accommodation affect the Board’s hiring decision?

No. HWDSB is committed to fair and accessible employment recruiting practices that attract and retain employees with disabilities. Under the Ontario Human Rights Code, employers and unions have a legal duty to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities who are adversely affected by a requirement, rule or standard. The principles of dignity, individualization, inclusion, and full participation are to be applied throughout the entire accommodation process.

What can I expect during an interview?

  • There may be a skill test. If so, details are on the job posting and shared in advance.

  • Interview panels typically consist of two people.

  • Questions will either be shown on screen or printed in front of you and read out loud.

  • The panel will alternate asking questions and will be taking notes.

  • All interviews are evaluated using standardized rubrics.

  • Expect a mixture of behavioural, situational, and open-ended questions.

  • You will be notified if you are or are not successful in your interview.

If I’m hired, will I need a Police Record Check?

Yes, all school board employees are required to provide a clear Police Record Check before they start work. Checks completed within six months of the offer date are accepted. The type of check required depends on the individual’s role and will be clear in the conditional offer. Any cost related to obtaining the Police Record Check is the sole responsibility of the applicant.
